Site Manager changes the game with Jessica Gallagher

Orrcon Steel Salisbury Site Manager Daniel Crompton has been nominated to participate in the 2017/2018 Change the Game program.

Change the Game is a program developed through partnership with BlueScope and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and it has been designed to build personal leadership capacity and expand mindsets beyond business and sport.

The Orrcon Steel Site Manager for Salisbury in Brisbane will join nine other BANZ (BlueScope Australia New Zealand) employees, who are matched with 10 elite Australian female athletes for mutual learning and development.

This customised development opportunity has been designed exclusively by BlueScope, AIS and Melbourne Business School (MBS) to provide BANZ leaders and sporting leaders of Australia with the right tools to excel as leaders.

It is the aim that business leaders from BlueScope and elite athletes can learn from each other.

BlueScope participants will see how athletes pursue elite performance and overcome setbacks, while athletes will learn how their skills can apply to business, preparing their careers after retiring from sport.

Mr Crompton has been matched with one of Australia’s most versatile and decorated summer and winter Paralympic athletes.

Jessica Gallagher has a sporting resume like no other.

• In 2010 she became the first Australian woman to win a medal at the Winter Paralympics, winning a bronze medal in the Women's Giant Slalom for Visually Impaired in Vancouver.
• In 2011 she competed at the Christchurch IPC Athletics World Championships in long jump and javelin, where she won a silver and bronze medal.
• In 2014 she won another bronze medal in the Women's Giant Slalom for Visually Impaired at the Sochi Winter Paralympics.
• At the 2016 Rio Summer Paralympics, she became the first Australian to medal in both the Summer and Winter Paralympics, winning a bronze medal in the Women’s B/VI 1000m Cycling time trial.

Mr Compton said Jessica’s achievements have him lost for words.

“To achieve what she has achieved in multi discipline sports, along with being a qualified Osteopath and Board Director is outstanding,” he said.

The avid sports fan was lucky to be invited by BlueScope this year, an opportunity he won’t take for granted.

“My aim is to leverage as many opportunities as possible to not only work with Jess, but other athletes in the program as well.”

Both Dan and Jess are regularly communicating in the lead up to a workshop in February at Port Kembla.

Mr Crompton said the regular communication between the pair has assisted his personal development.

“The opportunity to assist each other from a mentoring prospective, using each other’s strengths to work through our real-life situations is one the standout benefits to me through the first couple of months in the program,” he said.
